This may be a bit premature for some, but for those that have experienced the different bloodlines and ventured into breeding a litter or so of pups, what is your take on genetics? How much does genetics play in the different phases from birth to adult hound and what value is a pedigree when it comes to genetics and breeding? Lots to consider and can be derived from this post..so take off and give us some of your opinions and ideas..
Your right its alittle premature for me,i have the pedigrees to my hounds but the only thing i know about the bloodlines is what i research and ask you guys on here other than that i just know they are good hounds and make me happy and proud to be thier owner.
Being happy and proud of what you have at present is fantastic but depending on your age and how long you expect to be hunting with beagles,my opinion, a beagler needs to know how to keep the type hounds that make him happy and proud and that starts with breeding a litter of pups and if you can't trace back all the hounds in a three generation pedigree and saisfied with each hounds performance ?you are breeding blindly..Now if you can do that?breed within that three generation pedigree and you can continue for a long time with hounds that will satisfy YOUR likes in a hound.
I know there are those that will disagree with me but all i am attempting to do is keep down expenses and pups that you are not happy with and i speak from years of experince and a ton of mistakes and expense but now to the point i know how each pup will mature out as an adult.I know we are all entitled to make our own mistakes, but would it not be better if we could learn from others mistakes?? Those that have a problem accepting my breeding program ask those that have pups or hounds from my kennel.,and if you find ONE person that is not happy with the performance of the pup or hound they have,go in another direction and do NOT take my advice.I admit i do from time to time have a pup or two with crooked front legs but they make great rabbit hounds and love to hunt and it would be a shame to take that away from them due to crooked front legs..It is NOT my intentions to do anything other than to help others in this sport i enjoy so much,if in my power to do so...
You are right blind breeding is a risky buisness i have done it with lucky success, but i will only be breeding one more time with my best tricolor female that is mostly striker-bronko and my tricolor male pup that is only 12 weeks old now and started chasing at 11 weeks im still waitng for his pedigree but that dont matter much to me.I figure any pup that can start smelling a rabbit and going for it before ever seeing what he should be after deffinetly is going to be good its in his blood.
Keep one thing in mind..compare the two pedigrees..three generations on both..the one with the same dog in it the most is the one...most likely...will dominate. This is one thing many do not take into consideration when breeding and it is an important factor..Hope all your pups are brag hounds..
